The Sherman Young Family

Peter Sherman Young / aka: Sherman Peter Young
The arrangement of great grandpa Sherman's name comes his mother's handwritten note on the "Birth Record" page in the family Bible. I do not have possession of the Bible, but possess a xeroxed copy of the birth, death, marriage pages.
Known as "Uncle Sherm" to his nieces & nephews.
Farm name in Eskridge was: "Mulberry Hill Farm"

'The Factual History of Kansas' by Sherman P. Young © 1954 -- Authored a short story for a contest at age 89, and for this I am truly grateful because it gives the migration of his family from Indiana to Kansas.

Life Notes:
-Only educated to the 6th grade, but had great financial achievements in his life.
-In NY as a teenager he was a hunting/fishing guide and tracked in the winter. When he met Murrel Girndt he was an automotive mechanic. Self-taught and very skilled with working with his hands - a natural talent.
-After Murrel taught in NY for 3 years, she came back home to Eskridge, and he followed her there a few months later. He proposed, they got married and he obtained a job in Newton, Ks as an auto mechanic during the depression years. He made good money, because people could not afford to buy new cars, so they fixed the old ones. He owned and operated a radiator shop.
-Paul McDaniel was the owner of the Buick dealership and eventually Bob bought into the business. When Paul McDaniel retired, Bob bought him out and became soul owner, and renamed the dealership to the Girndt Motor Company. It was located on E. 6th Street, and eventually he also opened a used car lot.
-The dealership on 6th St. had a fire when Gail was in the 8th grade (possibly in the fall), but she couldn't go see it [the fire] because she had the measles, and she wanted to so badly. The dealership reopened at the used car lot on Hwy 81 on the South end of town.

Murrel Leta Young
Life Notes:

-Double wedding with sister, Violet Young, married in their home in Eskridge
-School Teacher. She met her husband while teaching in New York.
-Worked in the town laundry, flour mill in Newton KS. Had a very hard life raising her three girls.
-Made dresses from the flour sacks, which was common among the poor, and for all her family during WWII.
-Wonderful with flowers -- had a flower garden about 30 ft x 30 ft at home on 424 W. 5th St. in back left corner of back yard. She’d wear a long sleeved shirt to protect her from the sun, and had a straw gardening hat which she wore religiously. Grew lots of vegetables - corn, tomatoes, green beans.
-She liked to make Sand Hill Plum Jelly. The plum trees would grow in the sand hills along the road - hence the name.
-Grandma lived a long life. In her 90's she became senile, and forgot us. Although, Grandma had to live in a home, her daughter, Aunt Mary Lu, took wonderful care of her, forcing the home to take notice that 'she was watching' and visiting often. Aunt Gail lived farther away, but visited often, and relied of Mary Lu's judgement for Grandma's care. Harvey, Mary Lu's husband, supported her well.
-I visited Grandma a few times while she lived in the home, and it seemed it would take quite a while before she figured out I was Roberta's daughter, but after awhile she would forget again. I finally realized, it didn't matter who I was, she knew I loved her, and knew she loved me, too. She welcomed my few visits.
